Jordi Rello
Joan XXIII University Hospital, Tarragona, Spain

Jordi Rello MD PhD is Chief of the Critical Care Department, Joan XXIII University Hospital, as well as Associate Professor of Critical Care in Rovira & Virgili University Medical School, in Tarragona, Spain. Trained as a critical care specialist at the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona, Professsor Rello has been actively involved in clinical research in severe infections for the past 20 years and earned his doctor of science degree in infectious diseases with honours at the University of Barcelona, Spain.

In addition to his clinical and academic responsabilities, Professor Rello served as Chair of the European and Latinoamerican Consensus Conference on Ventilator Associated Pneumonia, reported in September 2001 in Chest. Professor Rello serves on the editorial boards of numerous journals, including Intensive Care Medicine, Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, Clinical Pulmonary Medicine, Medicina Intensiva, Enfermedades Infecciosas y Microbiologia Clinica. His work is reported in over 200 peer-reviewed articles or reviews for scientific journals such as the Annals of Internal Medicine, Lancet, AJRRCM, CID and Chest. Professor Rello also has co-authored several books and is co-Editor of the Critical Care Infectious Diseases Textbook, as well as Editor-in-Chief of the book series ‘Perspectives on Critical Care Infectious Diseases’.

Professor Rello lectures regularly at national and international meetings. His research has focused on the prevention and control of hospital-acquired infections, the epidemiology of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) or severe community-acquired pneumonia, and the treatment of infections in critically ill patients.

He is a recipient of numerous honours and awards, including, in 1994 and in 1995, a Young Investigator Award of the American College of Chest Physicians. Co-recipient of the EMANUEL WOLINSKY AWARD given by IDSA/CID as an author for the Best Article Published in Clinical Infectious Diseases 2003.

Professor Rello is a past president of the Catalonian Society of Critical Care. He is currently the Chair of the infection section from the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine.
